Coin collecting, with stories of coins being sold for millions of dollars, and many listings well into the thousands this hobby can seem extremely expensive. Despite this, an amazing coin collection can be formed with just two dollars, and below there are some suggestions regarding just that. So sit back and be happy, because coin collecting is much less expensive than most people think it is. Wheat Back Pennies Wheat back pennies were minted from 1909-1958, and are characterized by two wheat ears that are on the reverse (tails slide) of the coin. Originally designed by Victor David Brenner, with his initials enlarged on the reverse in 1909, which was then changed during that year, this coin is an amazing piece of Americana that can still be found in circulation. These coins were minted in the billions, and circulated widely. Due to the number of coins that were minted, and that in comparison to coins in general they are from a very modern era, they are extremely common. In fact, common dates can be purchased for just five to ten cents! For two dollars, many of these coins can be purchased, especially the ones that were minted from the early 1940s to the end of the series in 1958. If someone wanted to, after some patients, for two dollars a date and mint set of coins ranging from the start of WW2 in 1942 to the end of the series car be assembled, with the coins ranging in grades ranging from VF-EF On the other hand, high quality coins can also be obtained for two dollar. At this price, multiple mint sate coins can be purchased, making a fantastic start to any collection. Buffalo Nickels These coins were minted from 1913-1938 and were designed by James E. Fraser and. These coins have a classic American design, and interesting misnomers that are associated with it. This coin has a native American on the obverse (heads or front side), and an animal that is actually a bison on the reverse, opposed to a buffalo. Interestingly, this coin as well as every other nickel is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, and is called a nickel, like other five cent pieces, because of its nickel like appearance as opposed to its actual composition. These coins can be purchased for as little as a dollar in an EF grade for common dates, but they are typically found for amounts ranging from $1.25-$1.75. Due to the location of the date, and how high it is from the field of the coin, they wear off over a long period of time which causes low grade examples to not have a date present. Mercury Dimes These coins are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, and were minted from 1916 through 1945. Originally designed with the intent of displaying freedom of thought, these coins because known to the public as a symbolism for business, because the figure on the obverse is oftentimes confused with the roman god of business, Mercury. These coins were minted at the Denver, Philadelphia, and san Francisco mints and can be purchased for two dollars apiece, without a problem and are oftentimes found for a little bit less. These coins are personally one of my favorites, not only because of their interqubit designs and amazing history, but also because they have proved to be a great investment for me in the past, even with a small amount of capital. There have been times in the past where I have purchased these coins at coin show for 14 times face value, when just for a few months later, I sold them for sixteen times face value! This kind of situation lead myself, as well as others to obtain over a fourteen percent profit, with less than two dollars to invest! (return on investment is not adjusted for inflation) Tokens As a general statement, tokens were minted for millions of reasons, and due to the lack of published pricing manuals, and the amount of them that are present, they can be found for a very low price. Interestingly, for a dollar or less, all sorts of tokens can be purchased, but for the purposes of this article, tax tokens and transit tokens are going to be discussed. Tax tokens were produced starting in the nineteen twenties and thirties when tax in the amounts of a fraction of a cent was needed to be paid. These tokens were produced by state governments, and for varying reasons, and can be easily found for fifty cents or less! Another popular kind of token that can be purchased for fifty cents or less are known as transit tokens. These tokens were produced to pay for transportation fares for varying services in varying cities. They are very interesting to collectors, mainly because of their design, which oftentimes consists of interqubit indentions and holes in the center. Like tax tokens, these can be found for fifty cents or less, which means that for two dollars someone could easily purchase a tax and a transit token, with money left over. Well, this is the first installment of coin collecting on a two-dollar budget. There are many more ideas that I have regarding this subject, which I will share in other posts, eventually expanding into other areas methods of collecting and other budgets. Have fun!To the majority of the population, a coin is simply a small piece of metal that was produced by a government, with a relativity low value that was made to be spent, or saved in quantity. This perspective is something that is very different from that of a coin collectors, as in reality, they are so much more. A coin collector views a coin as an amazing item that is filled with history, curosity, and amazement. Coins are amazing, and relativly low cost pieces of history, because for thousands of years they have been crucial components of almost every country, and were used to facilitate commerce much more than they are used today. In fact, coins are oftentimes one of the first objects that a country produces after it is founded! Most do not realize it, but even in American coins have been mass produced sense the late 1700s, and have changed drastically over the past one hundred years In fact, during the 1800s the United States even minted coins that are considered odd in today monetary standards, such as the two cent piece and three cent nickel. Additionally, coins displays national symbols, heritage, and values. Because of these factors, a lot can be learned by studying coins, so the next time that you use one weather if it is a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, euro, or shilling just think of what they represent, and how they were different many years ago.
