Keeping Your Coins Safe
We all want to make sure that our coins are kept in a place that is safe, and decrease the possibility that it is going to be stolen. With this being said, the question often is how can the coins be stored in a cost and space efficient manner. I hope that this list helps provide some insight as to some of my favorite products on the market. Please note that this list is geared towards relatively small to mid sized collections, to be stored at home. I would like to note that I am not listing any fireproof safes, because often the materials that make a safe fireproof is very moist, which causes damage to coins in the long term.
1) Giantex Double Door Safe - 4.1 cubic feet total.
The Giantex Double Door digital safe is a personal favorite of mine. Although it is fairly large, with a total storage volume of 4.1 cubic feet I personally feel that it is best to start out with a fairly large safe, and grow into it over time than to make the investment in smaller safes then having to replace it as ones coin collection becomes larger. To start, I really like the size of the safe. 4.1 cubic feet is a safe that, for coins, is large enough to where it can store a lot of coins but it does not make the safe too large to where it is difficult to store. Additionally, the safe can be bolted down to make it even more difficult to steal, and it is constructed using fairly thick steal to make it even more difficult to get into. The double doors are a feature that I am a fan of personally, because it makes it much easier to organize a collection, and the safe comes with emergency keys so if for some reason one of the digital locks do not work you can still get into the safe. Please feel free to click the title to learn more about it.
2) Diversion Safe - Hide Stuff In Plain Sight.
Personally diversion safes are one of my favorite ways to store coins, bullion, and silver because they hide in plain sight! Most people would never think to look in places such as a can of chili for valuables. With this being said, as cleaver as they are they often are very small and make it difficult to store a decent amount of your collection. With this being said, please feel free to click on the pictures below to learn more about some of the diversion safes that are out there on the market. With these, just be careful to know which one is a safe, in comparison to those that are not so it is not accidentally thrown out.
3) 0.5 Cubic Foot Digital Safe.
The safe above is perfect for anyone starting a coin collection. Although it is smaller than the safe that was ranked first, it is less expensive and still has enough room to store a decent sized collection. This safe has the ability to be mounted, but has two bolts that keep it secure. Additionally, it comes with a couple of backup keys that can be used in the case the password is forgotten.
4) A Portable Safe
The safe above is perfect for the budget minded collector, as it is the most inexpensive one in the list, and it is also perfect for those who are traveling or having to keep coins in a situation where you have roommates. This safe is very small, and is intended to be portable which means it can be hidden if needed easier than the non-diversion options discussed above, and transported with ease. Additionally, this safe serves as a good diversion safe if you have a larger collection, where in the situation of a robbery they may find this safe with a few ounces of silver, take it, and not think of finding your larger safe which has the potential to greatly reduce the amount of losses incurred.
Silica Gel - To Keep Your Coins Dry
One thing that every coin collector needs to keep in mind when looking to find a way to store their coins is the effect that the environment can have on them. Believe it or not, moisture in the air has a negative effect on coins, especially ones with a lot of luster as it contributes to spotting, discoloration, and the eventually dark color that lustrous coins obtain over time. This is why it is very important to have silica gel in safes when storing coins, especially in the long term. This gel absorbed water content that is in the environment, and the great thing about the product that is linked to in the title is that it they are reusable, so they can be baked as specified in the directions and reused!
